Working In Harmony

I grew up as the middle child of three boys. Like most siblings we fought over insignificant things and argued over just about anything. We often tried to get each other in trouble by tattling. Many times we would instigate arguments between the other two just to watch them fight. Like most siblings, we were competitive and were always trying to outdo each other. We had the same parents, but we had three very distinct personalities. As we matured, the fighting and arguing stopped. We learned to get along and how to help each other out. Even though we sometimes have disagreements, we don’t allow those to be reasons to separate us. We recognize those are personal choices and don’t try to force each other to live by each other’s personal rules.

Romans 14 has a lot to say about similar things. We as individuals and corporate bodies of churches often fight with each other over things the way siblings do. We find reasons to argue with each other even though we serve the same God. Instead of working together, the way a body should, we find problems with each other’s choices and interpretations that don’t line up with our own. Paul says those are signs of immaturity. Why are we fighting with each other trying to prove who’s right or better? We’re on the same side. When we look for differences, we’ll find them and be divided. We know that a house divided can’t stand, nor can it accomplish its great commission.

Paul encourages us in verse 19 by saying, “So then, make it your top priority to live a life of peace with harmony in your relationships, eagerly seeking to strengthen and encourage one another” (TPT). The foot is not more right than a hand because it walks instead of grabs. An eye is not greater than an ear because it sees rather than hears. We have differences because there are strengths in our differences. Let’s quit firing our weapons at each other, look for each other’s strengths and work together so that all may know Him. We must live in peace and harmony with each other as believers. The best way to do that is to seek to help, strengthen and encourage each other in the work God has called each of us to. It’s time we matured in our faith and worked in harmony with each other to accomplish His will instead of our own.

Throwback Thursday is a feature I’m using to help build some margin into my schedule to pursue other ventures. Each Thursday I’ll be bringing you a previously written devotional that still speaks encouragement to us from God’s Word.

Harmony With Believers

Did you know there Greek word for harmony is “sumphóneó”? As you can guess, it’s where we get the words symphony from. If you’ve ever been to a symphony, you’ve seen the wind instruments, the string instruments, the brass, the percussion and others all playing their parts while working together under one conductor. The result is beautiful. Yes, there are some standouts like the first violinist, but as a whole, they work together without trying to overpower each other to accomplish the goal of what’s written on the paper. It’s no wonder the Bible told us as believers to be in harmony with each other. We are to work together, playing our part, following the Bible. When we work together, it’s beautiful.

Here are some Bible verses on harmony with believers.

1. Now, this is the goal: to live in harmony with one another and demonstrate affectionate love, sympathy, and kindness toward other believers. Let humility describe who you are as you dearly love one another.

1 Peter 3:8 TPT

2. How wonderful it is, how pleasant, for God’s people to live together in harmony!

Psalm 133:1 GNT

3. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty [conceited, self-important, exclusive], but associate with humble people [those with a realistic self-view]. Do not overestimate yourself.

Romans 12:16 AMP

4. I urge you, my brothers and sisters, for the sake of the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree to live in unity with one another and put to rest any division that attempts to tear you apart. Be restored as one united body living in perfect harmony. Form a consistent choreography among yourselves, having a common perspective with shared values.

1 Corinthians 1:10 TPT

5. So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

Romans 14:19 NLT

Creating Harmony

Years ago a guy came waltzing into my store demanding to speak to the manager. When I asked him how I could help him, he replied, “You’ve got to hire me! I’m the best salesman you ever saw.” He talked very highly of himself for a few minutes then asked for a job. I sent him to the online portal to apply, but told him I didn’t have any openings. Honestly, I didn’t want him on my team. He was hired by another manager a few months later. He came by to tell me I had made a mistake in letting someone else hire him. I then gave him some friendly advice. I told him there’s a fine line between confidence and conceited. One attracts people and the other repels them. He had come off as very conceited. He appreciated the frankness and learned to dial it back which resulted in lots of sales for him.

After David had been anointed king, the actual king, Saul, decided to kill him which sent David on the run. One of the places David hid was the Cave of Adullam. 1 Samuel 22 says that his father and brothers joined him there. Verse 2 says, “Everyone who was suffering hardship, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. There were about four hundred men with him” (AMP). David could have been conceited and been upset at the quality of people whom God sent to him. These were the outcasts of society. He could have denied them access, but he didn’t. He took them in and created an army. Thirty seven of these men became famous for their bravery and battlefield heroics. David found a way to lead these men and get along with them creating a formidable group capable of beating entire cities.

Romans 12:16 says, “Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty [conceited, self-important, exclusive], but associate with humble people [those with a realistic self-view]. Do not overestimate yourself.” That’s some good advice. When I find myself not getting along with someone, I have to evaluate myself. Am I the one who is being conceited, self important or exclusive? What can I do to find harmony with this person? I don’t have to be friends with them. But I do need to find a way to be at peace with them, especially if they’re believers. Who knows if God has brought them into my life to help me, shape me or learn from me? If I think too highly of myself, I might reject the very person God put in my life. I’m sure you can think of an outcast that’s shown up in your life too. Seek humility and harmony before kicking them out of your cave.

The Body In Harmony

I recently attended United Cry in Washington, DC. It was a multi-generational, multi-denominational, and multi-cultural group of Christian ministers who gathered together to join in prayer and repentance for our nation. It was a beautiful thing to see the Body of Christ working together. There were no discussions of doctrinal differences or jokes being made at the other’s expense. There were charismatics, liturgicals, blacks, whites, Asians, non-denominationals, small churches, and mega churches joined together in harmony with a single purpose: to pray for repentance and revival.

It reminded me of the church I worked at in Cairo, Egypt. There were over 15 denominations represented and more nationalities than that in one church. It was called a microcosm of Heaven. It was incredible to be on staff and watch as people from various backgrounds, denominations, and nationalities worked together to further the Kingdom. The Body of Christ can function as one and these two prove it.

Psalm 133:1 says, “How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!” (NLT) It is possible for us as believers to focus on what we have in common, instead of what divides us, and to live in harmony. I Corinthians 13:13 says, “But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.” We do have differences, but so does a hand and a foot. They have different functions, but are apart of the same body. It’s time that we as believers started to live in harmony and work together to win this world for Jesus. It will take all of us doing our part to handle the coming harvest. Will you be one who differentiates body parts or will you be one working in harmony?
