Being Strong

Can you imagine what was going through the Israelites minds as they walked around Jericho? They had been bedouins for forty years. They didn’t have the weaponry, the skill or the tools to attack a walled city. Yet God told Joshua to be strong and courageous. The directive wasn’t for him to do it in his own strength. It was to rely on God’s strength. All throughout the Bible we are told to be strong. That directive is the same to us as it was to Joshua. You may be facing insurmountable odds, fighting a spiritual battle or needing walls to fall that you’re not equipped to fight. It’s in these moments that you walk by faith and in God’s strength. It’s in your weakness and inabilities that His strength is made perfect. So be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might today.

Here are some Bible verses on being strong.

1. May He grant you out of the riches of His glory, to be strengthened and spiritually energized with power through His Spirit in your inner self, [indwelling your innermost being and personality], so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through your faith.

Ephesians 3:16-17 AMP

2. So you, my son, be strong [constantly strengthened] and empowered in the grace that is [to be found only] in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:1 AMP

3. So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT

4. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Ephesians 6:10 NKJV

5. Be on guard; stand firm in your faith [in God, respecting His precepts and keeping your doctrine sound]. Act like [mature] men and be courageous; be strong.

A Foundation Of Grace

Growing up on the Gulf Coast I’ve seen first hand the impact storms and hurricanes have had on homes and buildings. Hurricane Andrew hit the Bahamas and Florida in 1992 as a Category Five. It was the most destructive hurricane to ever hit Florida destroying homes and buildings. It was also the most costly for about 25 years. Afterwards, people changed how they built their houses. One of the biggest construction changes made was to the load path of the structure. They began to build them so that when the high winds came, it directed the wind loads on the roof and walls down to the foundation. A strong foundation can help a building endure just about any storm when the load is directed to it. Without this change, storms could wipe outa building leaving the foundation in tact.

Paul endured many real storms in his life and metaphorical ones too. His life was built on the Word of God and had a load path that directed life’s stresses to his foundation. In 2 Corinthians 12 he mentions a thorn in his flesh that was a messenger from Satan to torment him. He asked God to take away this storm, but He didn’t. God wanted to teach Paul how to direct the tension to his foundation. Jesus said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness” (NLT). From then on, Paul began to be glad about his own weaknesses because it wasn’t up to him or his strength to withstand the storm. He learned how to trust God in his weakness by relying on the firm foundation of grace.

Proverbs 10:25 says, “When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.” Have you been relying on your own strength to endure or have you been directing everything to your foundation? I’ve personally tried it both ways. In one instance, I lost everything but the foundation. However, when I let God rebuild my life, I learned to trust in Him and direct everything to the source of strength in my life. Having a form foundation or a life built on God’s Word doesn’t exempt you from storms. It simply helps you weather them. When the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy everything in your life, you can still be standing because your foundation is firm and you trust in God to help you endure. His strength is perfect and His grace is sufficient for whatever storm you’re facing.

Participating In The Process

Recently I was talking with my friend outside while the kids were playing. They decided they wanted to play basketball. They were taking turns shooting, but every time the youngest tried to shoot, she could barely get the ball over her heard. I lowered the goal to see if that would help, but it didn’t. She just wasn’t able to get the ball high enough to go through the hoop. The next time it was her turn, I picked her up and held her over the goal so she could easily make it. After realizing she couldn’t do it on her own, and that she could with help, she began to ask us to lift her up each time it was her shot. I couldn’t help but think that it was great picture of how God helps us accomplish the things He’s called us to.

When the disciples came to Jesus to tell Him the 5,000 people were hungry, He told them to give the people something to eat. Just like that little girl looking up at that basketball goal, they realized it was impossible for them. Jesus blessed the fish and loaves, but had the disciples distribute it and pick up the leftovers. They were still able to participate in the miracle with His help. He was always working to give them confidence to do the work of the ministry with His help and not on their own strength. When He sent out the 70 in Luke 10, He told them, “You won’t need to take anything with you—trust in God alone. And don’t get distracted from my purpose by anyone you might meet along the way” (TPT). He was reminding them that they get to participate in the miraculous with God and they wouldn’t need anything of their own to make it happen.

Before He sent them off, He also said, “The harvest is huge and ripe. But there are not enough harvesters to bring it all in. As you go, plead with the Owner of the Harvest to drive out into his harvest fields many more workers.” God is still looking for people who will participate in the work that needs to be done, but to do it in His strength and with His help. He calls us to things that are greater than ourselves so that we can rely on His strength and know that it’s not in our own abilities. We can keep trying to do things on our own, over and over again, but they will fall short. When we learn to ask Him for help, and present ourselves as available to participate, He comes in with His strength, lifts us up and allows us to complete the goal. Remember it’s in our weaknesses and inabilities that His strength is made perfect. When we do our part, He does His.

Your Greatest Strength

This morning, I’m remembering an old song by Steven Curtis Chapman called “His Strength Is Perfect”. It says, “His strength is perfect when our strength is gone. He’ll carry us when we can’t carry on.” Those lyrics still speak to me nearly 30 years later. All my life, when I have found myself on the floor crying out, “God, I can’t do it any more,” I’ve felt His peace and strength come over me. He had been waiting for me to quit trying to do the impossible without Him. He knows I’m a strong willed, stubborn person who has to get to that point sometimes before I remember the truth that His strength is made perfect in my weakness.

In II Kings 4, there was a widow who owed the debts her husband had created. She had done everything in her power to pay them off. She had sold everything she owned to pay it and it hadn’t been enough. The creditors were coming to take her kids as slaves in order to pay the debt. When she was out if her options, she went to Elisha the prophet. He asked what she had at home and she said, “Nothing at all except a small jar of olive oil.” He told her to get as many jars from her neighbors as she could, to fill them with oil from the small jar and then to sell the oil. The miracle came when she was ready to admit her inability to do anything.

In Mark 5:25-34, we read of a woman who had an terrible bleeding problem. She suffered from it for 12 years and had spent everything she had trying to get better. The doctors couldn’t help her, she was out of money and out of options. Then she heard Jesus was in town. She knew that He could do what she and the doctors couldn’t. She thought, “If I just touch the hem of His garment, I will get well.” She had come to the point where she realized that her own strength, her own ideas and her money couldn’t heal her, only Jesus could. She crawled through a crowd on her hands and knees to draw power from the One whose strength is perfect and she was healed.

In our own lives we spend a lot of money, time and effort trying to accomplish God’s will for our lives. We think that God has somehow chosen us to do what He’s called us to do because of our gifts or talents. God doesn’t need your abilities to accomplish His will. He needs your willingness to rely on Him. If you could do it in your own strength, it wouldn’t be a miracle. If you could make it happen, He wouldn’t get glory. That’s why the things He calls us to are greater than ourselves and our ability.

Don’t grow tired trying to manufacture the miracle. Don’t grow weary trying to perform the impossible. Your greatest strength is your weakness. In II Corinthians 12:9, God spoke to Paul and said, “My power is greatest when you are weak.” The Amplified version says His power is most effective in your weakness. God doesn’t need you to be strong. He needs you to be humble enough to admit you can’t do it on your own. When you come to that place, you open the door for miracles.
