Life Giving Words

One of the things I try to do is to stop negative words from coming out of my mouth. Our words have a profound influence on our lives and on those we speak to. They have the power of life or death in them, so it’s important to be careful with them. Jesus said He came to give life to us. As a follower of Him, it’s critical that we do the same. We must ask ourselves if the words we’re using are life giving or not. They act as seeds in our mind. They take root, grow and produce fruit in the lives of those who hear what we speak, including ourselves. The book of Proverbs has a lot to say on how important our choice of words is. Take time to ask the Holy Spirit to help you speak life giving words. It will change your life and those you speak to.

Here are some Bible verses on speaking life giving words:

1. Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken at the right time.

Proverbs 25:11 AMP

2. A person’s words can be a source of wisdom, deep as the ocean, fresh as a flowing stream.

Proverbs 18:4 GNT

3. Winsome words pour from a heart of wisdom, adding value to all you teach.

Proverbs 16:23 TPT

4. Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things.

Proverbs 8:6 NKJV

5. The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

Proverbs 18:21 NLT

Encourage Someone

I was sharing my story with someone and they made a remark about the encouragement I received from the people around me during that time. I agreed and told him I wouldn’t be around if it hadn’t been for those people who showed up and helped me through those times. We never know how important it is to someone when we show up in their time of need or say the right words when they need to hear them most. Those things provide the fuel people need to keep going when they’re ready to give up.

If you Google The word “encourage”, it means, “to give support, confidence or hope to someone.” You and I are told many times to encourage other believers and people around us. God knows that each one of us need words of encouragement to help us get through life. It doesn’t take a lot of effort or time to give encouragement to someone, and it can make a world of difference. Look around you today and offer encouragement to someone even if you’re not sure they need it. Doing it will brighten someone’s day and show them God’s love.

Here are some Bible verses on encouraging others.

1. A soothing tongue [speaking words that build up and encourage] is a tree of life.

PROVERBS 15:4 AMP

2. And so encourage one another and help one another, just as you are now doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 GNT

3. The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.

Proverbs 10:21 NLT

4. Our counsel is that you warn the freeloaders to get a move on. Gently encourage the stragglers, and reach out for the exhausted, pulling them to their feet. Be patient with each person, attentive to individual needs. And be careful that when you get on each other’s nerves you don’t snap at each other. Look for the best in each other, and always do your best to bring it out.

5. Discover creative ways to encourage others and to motivate them toward acts of compassion, doing beautiful works as expressions of love.

Bless You 

Blessing someone is not what we normally do unless someone sneezes. I believe it’s an under utilized tool God gives us. The fact that people in the Bible blessed their kids and each other, reiterates the power of words. I don’t know how many stories I’ve heard from people who have let what someone else said about them affect their self image. Those spoken words went out of the other person’s mouth and into their heart. Those words caused them to struggle for years.

Masaru Emoto did a study called “The Hidden Message in Water” to show the power of words. He used spoken word, labeling water with a word, and playing music then he immediately froze it. The results are astounding. What you see below are some of the photos taken from this experiment.
  
Now think about this: your body is about 60% water. Words have a greater effect than you or I realize. It’s no wonder that Solomon wrote in Proverbs 18:21 that death and life are in the power of the tongue. The words we say to our spouse, our children, our family, our neighbors, our co-workers, and those driving around us have real consequences. It’s so important that we learn to speak blessings over them.

Today, to end this devotion, I’m going to bless you with the words God told Moses to use to bless the congregation of Israel in Numbers 6:24-26.

“May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace” (NLT).
