A Meek Heart

I saw a meme that said, “Remember before the internet when we thought lack of knowledge was the problem?” The internet had provided limitless knowledge at people’s fingertips, and now add in AI. However, wisdom is different than knowledge. Wisdom tells us how to use knowledge . One of the things that the internet has done is it has stopped the practice of younger generations from going to older generations to seek wisdom. It has put the value on knowledge over wisdom. 1 Corinthians 8:1 says that knowledge puffs up, meaning it is a doorway to pride. Throughout the Bible God rejects prideful hearts because they act on knowledge instead of faith in Him.

In Genesis 11, we read the story of the Tower of Babel. The population was growing and spreading eastward until they came to a plain. Then they said, “Come, let’s begin work to build ourselves a city with a lofty tower that rises into the heavens. We’ll make a name for ourselves, a monument to us, instead of being scattered all over the earth” (TPT). This tower wasn’t just about architecture. It was a symbol of their pride to stop following the mandate to multiply and fill the earth. Instead of serving God, they served themselves to make their name great in the earth. God saw the trajectory of their hearts and put a stop to it.

In Psalm 131:1 we read an humble statement from David in a prayer. He said, “Lord, my heart is meek before you. I don’t consider myself better than others. I’m content to not pursue matters that are over my head— such as your complex mysteries and wonders— that I’m not yet ready to understand.” I believe David’s humility is why God chose him to be king. He understood there are things beyond his knowledge and ability to grasp. His humility caused him to rely on God instead of his own knowledge. Where the builders of Babel lifted their eyes high, David bowed low. Where in your life are you trusting in knowledge over trust in God’s plan? Where are you using knowledge as an excuse to serve yourself instead of God. Let your heart be meek before God. Let him handle the things beyond your ability and knowledge as your faith and trust guides you along His mandate for your life.

Half Built Towers

I like to make plans and then to execute those plans. When things aren’t going according to plan, I can be irritable and short tempered. My wife is usually quick to remind me that God may have other plans. In those moments I usually will seek God to see if it’s Him redirecting me or if it’s the enemy trying to stop me. There have also been times I’ve made plans without seeking His guidance. I knew what I wanted to do and decided to move forward with them with or without His blessing. On rare occasions, I’ve known what has God asked me to do, and made other plans. I don’t recommend this at all because one way or another, God’s plan will prevail. The sooner I submit to His plan, the better things are.

In Genesis 6-9 we read the account of the flood, Noah building the Ark and the year that he spent inside it. In Genesis 9:1 God told Noah and his family to repopulate the earth and to scatter abroad. Things were going well until Genesis 11 when a group of people decided to build a tower to the sky. In verse 4 they said, “Come, let’s begin work to build ourselves a city with a lofty tower that rises into the heavens. We’ll make a name for ourselves, a monument to us, instead of being scattered all over the earth” (TPT). They knew what God’s plan was and decided to enact their own. They decided the glory for their achievement was greater than obedience. In the middle of building the tower, God confused their languages, they separated and scattered abroad. The unfinished tower became a reminder to follow God’s plan.

Proverbs 19:21 says, “You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail” (NLT). Take a moment to reflect on the goals and plans you’ve made for this year. Did you seek God to see what He wanted you to accomplish? He has a personalized plan for your life and wants to work with you in accomplishing it. Don’t allow selfish ambition to sidetrack you. Follow God’s plan and do it with all your might. You will still face struggles and the enemy will try to thwart your efforts, but God will be right there with you through it. I’m sure you have some half finished towers in your life that you can look at to help you remember that God’s plan is the best plan and His will always prevail.

One Voice. One Mission.

I’ve been intrigued with the story of the Tower of Babel since I was a kid. If you are unfamiliar with it, after the flood wiped out the entire human race except for Noah and his family, there was one language on earth. As the population grew, they began to separate and move away from each other. One such group moved to the area of Babylon and decided to build a great city and a tower. Genesis 11:4 says, “And they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top reaches to the heavens. And let us make a name for ourselves…’” (LEB). God saw what they were doing and confused their languages. They separated into groups again and moved apart.

I’ve always heard this story come at the angle of pride or as the origin of languages. I’d like to take what they did and apply it to what we as the church could do today. In verse 6, God says something powerful that we can build on. He said, “Behold, they are one people with one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. So now nothing that they intend to do will be impossible for them (LEB).” If we, as the Body of Christ, could learn to be one people with one language, there would be nothing impossible for us.

When you look at the task of the Church given to us by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20, we are required to go into all of the world to preach the Gospel and make disciples of Christ. God said if we had one language and one mission, that nothing we intend to do would be impossible for us. We have the ability now, more than ever, to fulfill the Great Commission. We have the technology, knowledge and ability like no other time in history to do the impossible. What are we doing with that ability though?

I don’t think God minded that the people were building the Tower of Babel. I think the problem was that they were doing it to make a name for themselves. Some versions say it was to make themselves famous. When we do things in His name for our selves or to make our name famous, it will fail. If we learn to do things for His and to make His name famous, we will succeed. We have to get past trying to grow our churches and denominations for our own glory. We have to move past trying to get switchers from one church to another. We weren’t called to do that. We were called to grow His Church by winning the lost.

If we all focus on winning the lost rather than each other’s members, we’ll see explosive growth in the Kingdom. We can only do that if we have one voice and one mission. We were already given the one mission. Now we just have to learn to speak with one voice and to work together. Nothing will stand in our way or be impossible for us. Our desire should always be to make His name known, not our own. Our goal should be to proclaim His Gospel, not ours. That holds true for you and I on an individual level as well as our churches on a corporate level. What can you do today to make Him known to those around you?
