Holding On Tightly

If you could go back in time and watch anything in the Bible happen, what would it be? Watching the walls of Jericho fall would be high on the list for me. I wonder what the people on both sides thought as they marched around the walls. To hear the trumpets blast and the people shout because God had given them the city would be incredible I think. Then to stand there in awe as the walls collapsed and feel the earth shake from it would be the experience of a lifetime. I have read that story many times since I was a kid. I have even marched and driven around situations praying for spiritual walls to fall and for breakthrough. I’ve experienced the miracle of God moving in the moment like He did that day, but I’ve also experienced standing there waiting for the walls to fall. How do you respond when you’ve done everything you can and the walls remain while breakthrough eludes you?

In Mark 5:25-34, we read about a lady who had done everything she could, but her breakthrough never came. For 12 years, she had suffered with an issue of blood that made her unclean according to the Law. For 12 years she had gone to every doctor she could find only to get worse. For 12 years she faced disappointments and set backs. Think about where you were and what was going on in your life 12 years ago to put that into perspective. Somehow this woman kept marching around the walls praying for them to fall, when one day she heard about Jesus. She thought if she could just touch the hem of His garment, she would be healed, so she snuck up behind Him in the crowd. When she touched it, her breakthrough came and she was healed.

Hebrews 10:23 says, “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise” (NLT). It’s hard to keep holding on when your breakthrough doesn’t happen or is delayed, but like that woman, we can’t let go. Our hope is not based on the moment we’re standing in, but in the promise of the Great I Am, who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Our faith must be greater than our feelings if we’re not going to waiver in those times when we’re staring down walls we’ve prayed would fall. Like the Israelites we need to keep marching and thanking God for the victory that’s coming. Like the woman we must seek out the hem of His garment when everything else has failed. We can trust in God’s promises and who He is because He’s been faithful. I don’t know when your breakthrough will happen, but I know you must keep holding on tightly to your faith in Him no matter what.

The Deception Of Busyness

Busy is often worn as a badge of honor. Not only are we usually busy, we’re also in a hurry to get things done or running behind schedule. Sound familiar? Many of us aren’t just busy here and there. We’ve become chronically busy. It has become the state we live in. Corrie Ten Boom once warned that if the devil can’t make you sin, he’d make you busy. The reason is that busyness severs our connection with God and causes us to miss opportunities God has placed around us. Many of us are too busy to stop and be the Good Samaritan to the hurting and broken down people God places on our road. We pass them by because we don’t have time.

Jesus was never too busy to heal. In Luke 8, a Jewish official came to Him saying that his daughter was dying and in desperate need of healing. As He was on his way to heal her, He was interrupted by the woman with the issue of blood. She reached out and touched His robe to receive her healing. He stopped what He was doing to ask who touched Him. We have this beautiful story because He stopped along the way before going to raise Jarius’ daughter. We also know that He also would make time in his busy schedule to break away from the crowds to spend time with the disciples in a small group setting and also found time to be with God alone. Even though He had lots of demands on His time and Himself, He made sure He was never so busy that it severed His relationship with the Father.

In Matthew 11:28 Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (ESV). Have you allowed yourself to be so chronically busy that you’ve been borrowing time from the things that matter most? We can get so busy about the Father’s business that we fail to spend time with the Father if we’re not careful. Jesus modeled for us that we can be effective in our lives or ministry and still make time for the hurting, for mentoring and for praying. If you’re driving or walking past people you wish you could help, turning away people who interrupt your day that need you or are minimizing your quiet time, you’ve become chronically busy. Jesus offers us a place of rest from our laboring. He offers us holy moments throughout our day. Don’t get so busy that you miss them. If you are missing them, it’s time to break free from the deception of busyness.

Looking Past Distractions

Apple Vision Pro came out not long ago. If you’re unaware of what they are, they’re goggles in a sense that blend virtual reality with reality. You can watch movies, browse the internet and so much more on virtual screens. The day after they came out, videos started surfacing of people walking down the sidewalk with them on moving screens and interacting with them. A few hours after that, videos of people driving down the road in their Tesla started to emerge taking distracted driving to a whole new level. Most of us are guilty of distracted driving to some degree whether it’s with our phones or being deep in thought. Have you ever shown up somewhere and don’t remember the journey? Distracted driving takes our eyes off of what’s important: the road. We can’t afford to do that.

In Mark 5, a man named Jairus went to see Jesus about his daughter who was very sick. As Jesus was headed to his house, they were distracted by a woman who had been unable to stop her bleeding for 12 years. She was focused and wasn’t going to let anyone keep her from touching the hem of His garment to receive her healing. Once she touched Jesus, He stopped. While Jesus was talking to her, friends of Jairus came up and told him his daughter had died. Verse 36 says, “But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, ‘Don’t be afraid. Just have faith’” (NLT). Jesus was telling him not to get distracted from the mission by the news from his friends. Because Jairus kept his attention and faith on Jesus, his daughter was raised to life.

Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you” Have you been getting distracted by reports, circumstances or people and taking your eyes off Jesus? If you don’t have peace in what you’re going through, I want to encourage you to take your eyes off your problem and give your attention to the One who can resolve any situation. Jairus’ daughter was dead and became alive by Jairus’ faith. The woman who, doctors had tried everything on was healed because of her determination and focus on Jesus. What’s impossible for man is possible with God. Trust in Him and keep your thoughts fixed on Him and you will have peace in whatever situation you find yourself in. We must learn to look past the distractions of this world.

Turning Fear Into Action

How many times has fear kept you from doing something? All of a sudden those “What if” thoughts flood in, your tongue swells up, you get that acids taste in the back of your throat and then your body won’t move. Your mind says you want to, or you should, but your body doesn’t cooperate. It happens to all of us, especially when we’re called to do something by faith. You feel the nudge to tell someone God loves them or to share your faith, but nothing cooperates and they walk away. Something inside says to give them money, but by the time you convince yourself to grab your wallet, you look up and they’re gone. You hear about going on a mission trip, but you’re waiting to “hear from God” and the deadline passes. We like to say, “Faith over fear,” but the reality is that fear stops us from acting in faith pretty often.

I can’t help but think of the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5. I can imagine the fear she must have had, the thoughts that told her it was a silly idea or the what if doubts that could have kept her from touching Jesus. But in verse 28, she overcame those fears with another thought, “If i could just touch the hem of His garment, I’ll be healed.” Her need for healing became greater than her fear and propelled her to action, and now she’s forever enshrined in the Bible as a lesson of pushing past fear. She’s an example to each of us in turning fear into action and a reminder that we’re often one step away from receiving what God has for us. She pushed through a crowd and her fears, and we can too.

Hebrews 10:39 reminds us, “But we are certainly not those who are held back by fear and perish; we are among those who have faith and experience true life!” (TPT) Your identity in Christ is rooted in actionable faith, not paralytic fear. To beat that fear, you need to act quickly when the Holy Spirit prompts you to do something. Decide now so there won’t be a debate in your head later. Everything inside you may feel like it’s on fire, but press through and act on the prompting. Have a phrase ready like, “God loves you, “ say it and walk away. If they call out, stick around. You may end up blessing them more. Whatever it is that fear keeps you from, and whenever it starts to paralyze you, remind yourself that as a Christian, you are not held back by fear. We act on faith and experience God’s blessings and true, abundant life because of it.
