Trust The Truth

One of the things so many of us deal with is an internal battle from something someone said. It wasn’t the truth, but somehow those words hit us where it hurts and then we can’t get rid of them from our minds. Everyone has their own vulnerabilities and what I’ve learned is that the lies that stick with us are the ones that go after those insecurities. Those lies rattle around in our head, attach themselves to our vulnerabilities and then we begin to believe the worst things about ourselves. Some people live their whole lives fighting a silent battle in their mind. That’s why it’s so important to know what the truth is and to know how to combat lies with it.

I’ve always loved the story of Gideon. However, when we are introduced to him, you can tell he’s had lies spoken over him that he believed. In Judges 6:12 he’s greeted by an angel who says, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” (NLT) He then complains instead of receiving the truth. When the angels asks him to lead the army and defeat the enemy, he says, “But Lord, how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!” He used the lies he believed about himself to not do what God had called and equipped him to do. The Lord gave him more truth the defeat the lies. Eventually Gideon stepped out in faith, freed the nation and became the mighty hero that the Lord knew he already was. He just had to push past the lies and trust the truth.

1 John 2:21 says, “I am writing to you not because you don’t know the truth but because you know the difference between truth and lies.” You know the truth that you are God’s child, that greater is He that is in you and that you are an overcomer. It’s the truth that will set you free. If the lies are feeling stronger than the truth, then you need to be putting more truth from the Bible in your mind. You need to be asking the Holy Spirit to remind you of what God’s Word says and what He sees in you. It didn’t happen over night for Gideon. It happens over time of putting the truth inside, repeating the truth when the lies present themselves and then stepping out in faith even before you fully trust the truth. When you live in the truth, the lies will have no where to hide.
