Pushing Past Fear

Have you ever been afraid to do what God asked you to do? I have. When God asks you to speak to someone, speak to a group, give something away or whatever, it can make you feel uneasy. I usually question if I’m hearing Him. I woke up in the middle of the night once and felt the need to reach out to a person I barely knew. The message was a hard one calling them out on sin. I brushed it off and tried to go back to sleep. I wrestled with it all night, but couldn’t shake it. Finally at 6:00 AM, I gave in and sent the message. Immediately they replied asking how I knew. After explaining my night, they had a choice to make: they could stay in sin or repent. They chose the latter which caused them to uproot their family and move. Even though I was afraid to deliver the message, I trusted the voice of God.

In Judges 7, God had told Gideon to build an army to fight the Midianites. His army was just over 30,000 and going up against one over 100,000 strong. He was leading them to the battlefield when God Told him he had too many warriors. He let all who were afraid leave, and 22,000 headed home. Then God told him he still had too many and needed to weed out some more. At the brook, God had him separate the men who cupped their hands and drank and sent the rest home. He now only had 300 men, and a mind full of doubt and fear. God told him if he was afraid to go to the enemy’s camp and listen, which he did. He heard two men share dreams which confirmed the Lord was with him. He trusted the Lord, attacked and won a great victory.

Psalm 56:3 says, “But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you” (AMP). Do you trust what you’re hearing from the Lord or what you can see with your eyes? Often what God asks us to do either doesn’t make sense in the moment or moves us from our comfort zone. God understands that to get growth out of us, we must be moved from where we try to stop on our journey. He also is looking for people to give His message to someone or to share His love with them. You and I are often that vehicle and it can be scary to think about. If you’re standing in that moment now, don’t let fear win. Trust in God no matter what you feel. You can also be like Gideon and ask God for confirmation that you’re hearing Him. It’s time to step out in faith. Victory is on the other side of obedience.

Trust Comes First

When I’m talking with someone who is a newly appointed leader, I don’t want to overwhelm them with a bunch of information. There’s really one thing they need to focus on with their new team, and that is trust. Without trust, nothing else really matters. You can give inspiring speeches, set daring goals and create easy to follow plans, but no one will do much until they trust the leader. Think of a leader in your life that has produced the most growth in you. They had your trust I’m sure. You would follow them anywhere they led because of that trust. People will follow any leader to the extent that they trust them. If there’s little to no trust, there will be little to no progress. The way you build trust is to say what you’re going to do, and then do what you said you’d do.

We often think of people as leaders, but the Bible is full of people who followed God and did amazing things. For each of them, there was a period where they learned to trust Him. Moses learned to trust God at the burning bush. He gave all kinds of excuses as to why he couldn’t do what God was asking because there was little to no trust. God answered them all and showed him many signs to build trust so that he could lead the Israelites out of Egypt. In a similar fashion, God had to build trust with Gideon. He was timid and afraid of his enemies when God called the mighty warrior out of him. He built trust by placing dew on his door mat. So much trust was built that Gideon trimmed down an army of 32,000 to 300 men in order to fight 135,000. It didn’t make sense to him, but because of that trust, he was able to lead them to victory.

How much do you trust God? You may not have had a burning bush experience or dew on your mat, but God has been doing things al, your life to build trust with Him. Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart rely on him to guide you, and he will lead you in every decision you make” (TPT). Trusting God completely is what we’re called to do, but like Moses, we tend to make excuses as to why we can’t. Or sometimes we’re like Gideon where we don’t see our own potential the way He does. Either way, you can only follow God’s leading in your life to the extent that you trust Him. If you’re not experiencing the growth or movement that you want, check your trust level. God is ready to lead you into a greater life and relationship with Him, but you must trust Him with all your heart first.

Affirmation From God

When I’m working with a leader and teaching them how to coach an employee, I tell them that the last step is the most important. After creating a collaborative action plan for future behaviors, they must end with an affirmation of belief in the employee. It’s critical for the leader to say, “I know you can make this change and it will change your results.” When we haven’t met expectations or have fallen short in an area repeatedly, our negative self talk can keep us in a cycle of failure. Affirmations of belief from a superior resonate in a person and can replace that self talk. There’s something to having someone believe in you that encourages you and gives you the will to face a battle you’ve lost before.

In Judges 6, israel was being bullied by the Midianites. The Israelites would often hide from them in caves and other places where they wouldn’t be seen. The Midianites would destroy their crops, take their livestock and make life unbearable for the Israelites. That’s when we’re introduced to Gideon. He had managed to grow some grain without them destroying it and was hiding while threshing it. Suddenly God visited him in the form of an angel and spoke to him. He said, “The Lord is with you, brave and mighty man!” (GNT) Gideon didn’t see himself that way in the moment and asked why God hadn’t delivered them. That’s when God told him to go in the strength he had to deliver Israel. God believed in Gideon and affirmed something in him that he didn’t see in himself. He went on to defeat the Midianite army and become the leader of Israel.

Galatians 1:21-22 says, “God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ, putting his Yes within us. By his Spirit he has stamped us with his eternal pledge—a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete” (MSG). God has put His Spirit in you as a believer affirming your calling and giving you strength to accomplish His will for your life. He sees you as a mighty warrior who is able to defeat the thing standing in your way. He’s given you strength to complete what you haven’t been able to do on your own. He calls out of us abilities and strengths we didn’t know we had. We access those by stepping onto the battlefield in faith the way Gideon did. When God calls you to something, He equips you and strengthens you when you step out in faith. Gideon had to step onto the battlefield with 300 men to face 130,000. He didn’t feel qualified and he didn’t feel prepared, but when he stepped out in faith, God showed up. The same is true for us. God affirms who we are in Christ and gives us strength in our weaknesses.

Giving Away Treasure

On our tour of Israel we visited the caves of Qumran. It’s located not far from north end of the Dead Sea. In 1946 some shepherds were watching their goats in the area. The goats were climbing the steep rocks looking for food. As it became time to head to camp, one of the shepherds climbed up the cliff to bring down a couple of goats that weren’t coming down. He came upon two small openings in the cliff which he felt like could be caves. He threw a rock into one and heard some pottery break. He looked in, but couldn’t see anything. He and the other shepherds decided it was too late to explore and that they would come back in a couple of days hoping to find treasure. When they did come back and make it into the cave, many were empty and a a few had papers in them. The treasure they had found wasn’t what they were hoping for, but turned out to be the Dead Sea Scrolls.

In Judges 7, we read were Gideon had an army of about 32,000 men and were headed to fight the Midianite army of about 135,000. On their way, God whittled down Gideon’s army to just 300 men who would fight this battle. He divided his troops into three groups giving each man a rams horn and a clay pot with a torch in it. They approached the enemy’s camp around midnight and got into position around their camp. At the right moment, they blew the rams horns, then broke their clay pots, lifted their lights and shouted, “A sword the Lord and for Gideon!” (NLT) The Midianite army woke up in such confusion and fear that they fought themselves and the Lord gave victory to Gideon.

2 Corinthians 4:7 says, “We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” Paul used this imagery to remind us of the treasure, strength and light we have inside of each of us. Like Qumran, it’s when we are broken and let others see inside that they can discover the real treasure of Jesus. It is His strength that helps us through the battles we face and will help others as well. Finally, we must let His light shine wherever we go. It causes confusion to our enemy, but leads others to a saving grace from the darkness they’re living in. Don’t keep your faith hidden away from others. You have God’s treasure inside and He’s placed you around people seeking it. Open up and give this treasure away like you’re made of it.

Walking Through Fire

How do you react when you’re going through a difficult season? We all go through periods where we’re under attack and it feels like God has abandoned us. I’ve asked God where He was and if He really cared before. I felt isolated and began to withdraw. I started to think I was going through a period like Job. The difference was that when Job lost everything and he didn’t understand, he worshiped and his prayer life increased. When he was ,et with silence, he kept praying and trusting God. His faith was greater than the season he was in. His prayers may not have been that great, but he didn’t cut off communication with Heaven.

In Judges 6, Israel was living in the Promised Land. However, the generation that had seen God bring them through the wilderness and helped them conquer the land had passed away. They began to be overcome by enemies and God would raise up a judge to be a hero. In this occasion, the Midianites were harassing the people, taking their crops and starving them. Gideon was threshing some grain hidden away so that they wouldn’t steal it when God showed up. He called out to Gideon and said, “Mighty warrior, God is with you.” Gideon replied in verse 13, “If God is with us, why has all this happened?” God tells him to go and rescue Israel to which Gideon says he’s a nobody and not very strong. God then reminds him that He is with him and will give him victory. Gideon them sets Israel free.

In Isaiah 43:2 God says, “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you” (NLT). God didn’t say, “If you go through deep waters,” He said, “When”. Hard times are going to come for all of us. Seasons where we feel abandoned will happen, but God promises when it feel like we’re drowning or we’re being oppressed and going through the fire, He is with us. Because He is with you, He will give you victory. He will strengthen you. Neither Job nor Gideon felt strong enough for their situations, but God infused them with His grace and His strength and they were able to survive their season and be victorious in the end. If God did it for them, He’ll do it for you. He has not abandoned you. He’s calling a mighty warrior out of you and walking through the fire with you.

Equipped And Ready

Gideon is one of those stories in the Bible that I go back to over and over again. He was scared of his enemies, so he was hiding when the angel appeared to him. The angel then greets him with, “Mighty Hero! The Lord is with you” (NLT). I’m sure Gideon had a confused look on his face and then looked around for the hero. He then asked a great question any of us would have asked. If the Lord is with me, why are things so bad? He didn’t get an answer though. Instead, the angel calls on him to save Israel from the very enemy he’s hiding from.

In Judges 6:14 the angel of the Lord said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” I love this response because it is a great picture of who God is. He calls us to do things in our own strength and giftings. When we see ourselves in the mirror, we think who we are and what we have is not enough. God sees beyond our fears and insecurities though. He sees who we can become if we would trust that He’s with us and will pick up the slack for the things we lack if we will simply step out with what we have already been given.

I believe every one of us are called to do something. There is a purpose and a plan that God has for each of our lives. It’s up to us to trust Him to be with us, and to walk in that calling. It’s time for us to quit looking at ourselves with these human eyes so we can trust what God sees in us with His eyes. It’s in our weaknesses and inabilities that His strength is made perfect. He only asks that we trust Him enough to do the things He called us to. If God has confidence in you, I think it’s time you had it too. Through Jesus, you are more than a conqueror. You are a mighty, valiant hero ready and equipped to do what He called you to.

You Are Empowered

Have you ever been told, “If you’re going to complain about a problem, bring a solution”? There are usually at least two types of bosses who will say that. The first knows there are tons of problems, but is either tired of hearing about them or has no clue how to solve them. They use that line to keep people from constantly bringing up issues. The other type wants your input on the situation and will often empower you to enact your solution whether it’s the right one or not. They want to help you take ownership of the organization and also want to help you grow. One of these bosses are healthy, and the other is not.

In Judges 6, we find the story of Gideon. He was threshing his wheat in a wine pit so that he couldn’t be seen by the Midianites. At harvest time, they would come through Israel and steal their harvest while they were threshing it. While he was hiding, the Angel of the Lord showed up to talk to him. That’s when Gideon told him that ever since they left Egypt and took over their land, the Lord had abandoned them and allowed Midian to overtake them. In verse 14, the Angel responded, “The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this strength of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” (AMP) God empowered him to set Israel free. God could have wiped out the Midianites, but chose to partner with Gideon to accomplish it.

As Jesus was preparing to die on the cross, He prayed over the disciples and believers which includes us. In John 17:18 He prayed, “Just as You commissioned and sent Me into the world, I also have commissioned and sent them (believers) into the world.” Jesus had been on a mission to preach the Gospel, to set the captives free and to release the oppressed. Here, He handed that job to you and me. We are God’s solution to a broken world. Are we still complaining about it to God or are we going in the strength we have because He sent us? Like Gideon, we may be timid or even doubt, but also like him, we must step out of hiding and walk in faith to accomplish all God wants go through us. You are anointed. You are commissioned. You are called. Go set people free today by the power of the Gospel wherever you go. You are empowered to solve this world’s problems with God’s solution.

A Confident Warrior

One of the misconceptions many of us believe is that when God is with us and for us, we won’t experience bad things. It can be quite a shock when we go through a very long season of difficulties. We question our faith, we question what’s going on and we question God. Almost every time, there are no answers. I remember crying out, “God, where are you? If you’re with me, why is this happening?” I didn’t get any answers, but I did find out that God’s Grace is deeper than any trouble I went through. It was sufficient to carry me through the darkest times.

In Judges 6, Israel was constantly being attacked by the Midianites for seven years. When Israel’s crops would start to grow, the Midianites would come destroy them. They stole their livestock as well so that Israel was without food and became impoverished. Israelites lived in constant fear because of it. That’s when the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and called him a mighty warrior saying God was with him. In verse 13 he replied, “‘Sir, if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites’” (NLT). He didn’t get answer, but he did get a mission to deliver Israel.

Even when we face the longest, darkest struggles, we have God’s promise to never leave us. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be determined and confident. Do not be afraid of them. Your God, the Lord himself, will be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you” (GNT). It’s hard to be confident in those times. Gideon wasn’t, but God called out the confident warrior in him. There’s a confident warrior in you too. You are able to face any struggle, fight every battle and survive any difficult season because God is with you. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Don’t back down or lose hope now. Be determined and confident in Him. He will not fail you or go back on His promises.

Stand Strong

One of my favorite people in the Bible is Gideon. I’m reminded of his story so often because I find myself in need of all the lessons it teaches. In Judges 6, the Bible explains that times were bad in Israel. The Midianites were destroying crops, killing animals and harassing the Israelites. There wasn’t anything anyone could do to stop them. The Israelites lived in fear because of all the bad things that were happening. If they had grain, they had to thresh it in hiding. If they had goats, they had to keep them hidden. Anything in the open would be taken.

Gideon was threshing his grain in the bottom of a wine press so no one would see him. An angel appeared and called out to him, “Mighty hero, The Lord is with you.” Gideon, who was hiding because he was afraid of the Midianites, didn’t think twice about the angel calling him a hero. What caught his attention was that the angel said, “The Lord is with you.” He took a double take at the angel and must have thought this guy didn’t know much. How could he say that when so many bad things were happening?

He confronted the angel and asked, “If The Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us?” Have you ever felt that way? When everything in life is going wrong and you feel abandoned by God. It’s an uncomfortable place. A dark place. Fear of the future grips your mind. You find yourself constantly worrying about things that you have no control over. You feel like God has forgotten you or worse, abandoned you in need. Your mind tells you that God doesn’t care. That He doesn’t see you in your pain.

In this verse, the angel reminds us that God’s presence in our lives isn’t proven by our circumstances. Our lives can be falling apart and God can still be with us. We’ve somehow come to believe that God is with us when things are good and has abandoned us when times are bad. His presence is with you no matter what. He is with you even when you can see His hand or feel His presence. He is with you when your life is so dark that you can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. He is not only with you, He’s preparing you for greatness in those times. Greatness doesn’t come from an easy life. It’s forged in the darkness and in the fire.

Whatever you are facing today, I say to you, “Mighty hero, The Lord is with you!” You may not feel like a hero, but you’re still standing through everything. You may not feel like The Lord is with you, but He has never left your side. He has been standing next to you through everything you have faced and everything you will face because He will not abandon you. He will not forsake you. He will not forget you. He will deliver you when the timing is right. He will lead you to better times when you have learned all He wants to show you in the dark. Stand strong today because The Lord is with you.
