The Greatest Reward

So many companies are offering rewards for downloading their app or being loyal to them. My grocery store give gas discounts, restaurants offer free food, credit card companies offer points and even the police offer money to help catch someone. We seem to be motivated by rewards. Maybe that’s why God offers us rewards as well for seeking Him and following His way of living. The reward He offers is greater than anything here on earth. He offers us the reward of finding the one thing we are all seeking. There’s a hole in everyone’s life that they spend a lifetime trying to fill. It can only be filled by Him. When we seek Him, we will find Him. When we find Him, we find our purpose. When we find our purpose, our life is fulfilled. What a reward that is! When we seek Him and draw near to Him, He draws near to us and we experience His presence moving and working in our life.

Here are some Bible verses that show God rewards us:

1. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 ESV

2. There’s a crown of righteousness waiting in heaven for me, and I know that my Lord will reward me on his day of righteous judgment. And this crown is not only waiting for me, but for all who love and long for his unveiling.

2 Timothy 4:8 TPT

3. Trouble follows sinners everywhere, but righteous people will be rewarded with good things.

Proverbs 13:21 GNT

4. The Lord rewards me because I do what is right; he blesses me because I am innocent.

Psalm 18:20 GNT

5. Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds.

Revelation 22:12 NLT

God’s Rewards

Did you know that God will give out rewards in Heaven? We often think of a reward as money given for finding something lost, but it’s more than that. The dictionary also says it’s a consequence for a behavior or a return on investment. I believe these are more in line with what God has for us. In the very beginning God created the Law of Sowing and Reaping. What we sow on earth, we will reap in eternity. God offers rewards for many things in the Bible. Will the things you’re doing today bring you a reward in Heaven? If there are behaviors and actions that are important enough to God that He will reward them, they should be important to us enough that we strive for them.

Here are some Bible verses on the rewards God gives.

1. There is no difference between the one who plants and the one who waters; God will reward each one according to the work each has done.

1 Corinthians 3:8 GNT

2. So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you!

Hebrews 10:35 NLT

3. No one can please God without faith, for whoever comes to God must have faith that God exists and rewards those who seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 GNT

4. He who receives and welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and he who receives a righteous (honorable) man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.

Matthew 10:41 AMP

5. But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.

Jeremiah 17:10 NLT

Keep Working

Positive reinforcement is a great tool to encourage people to continue doing what they’re doing. It rewards them for a job well done. Many companies are like mine where they give bonuses if you meet the goals the company sets for you or if you help the company meet their goals. For me, that last one comes once a year. After several months it’s easy to forget several months that I will be rewarded next year if I help the company achieve its goals long term. Sometimes it feels like a chore having to do the things I have to do because I forget about the reward at the end.

In II Chronicles 15, King Asa must have been feeling the same. He was the first king in a while to remember God. He got rid of most of the idols and shrines. He even removed his grandmother from the role of queen mother because of her love for idols. He also defeated armies with over three times as many men. God was blessing him, but he was starting to lose sight of the positive reinforcement that God was using to bless him for doing what he was supposed to do.

The spirit of God came on Azariah and he went to the king to deliver a message from God. In verse 7, he said, “But you must be strong and not be discouraged. The work that you do will be rewarded” (GNT). I believe God is saying that to you and I today. He wants to encourage us to continue doing the work He called us to. I know that we can feel like God has forgotten us as we focus on completing and doing the work He’s given us, but He hasn’t forgotten us. We will be rewarded.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we will reap the harvest.” God believes in positive reinforcement. He has given us many promises in His Word to keep doing the work even though it gets tiring and mundane. If we will continue to do what He’s called us to, we will reap a harvest and a reward. Don’t quit doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Don’t give up. God sees what you’re doing even if others don’t. He won’t fail in delivering on His promise to you.

Throwback Thursday is a feature I’m using to help build some margin into my schedule to pursue other writing ventures. Each Thursday I’ll be bringing you a previously written devotional that still speaks encouragement to us from God’s Word.

God’s Rewards For You

Years ago I owned a childcare center. There were times when the classes would get chaotic (keeping 20 two year olds behaving all day is hard work). The most effective way to quiet them and get them todo what you wanted was through positive reinforcement. The teacher would find someone doing what they wanted and say, “Oh I love how Tarissa is sitting!” Suddenly another kid would do what she was doing in order to be recognized. If you really wanted results, you’d praise her with words and give her a reward for obeying. In no time flat, all the kids would start mimicking her behavior so they could be recognized and receive a reward.

So many times, we think of God as someone who is up there waiting to punish us for doing wrong. I believe He’s more like a patient teacher who uses positive reinforcement to help us down the paths He has for us. There are rewards and blessings that He has for those who obey His Word. Yes, there are consequences for disobedience, but God motivates us through rewards. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t appreciate being rewarded for doing what’s expected.

Here are some Bible verses on the rewards God has for us.

1. And without faith living within us it would be impossible to please God. For we come to God in faith knowing that he is real and that he rewards the faith of those who passionately seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 TPT

2. For God will reward each of us according to what we have done.

Romans 2:6 GNT

3. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

1 Peter 1:9 NLT

4. Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we have accomplished together, but that you may receive a full and perfect reward [when He grants rewards to faithful believers].

2 JOHN 1:8 AMP

5. Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.

James 1:12 MSG

10 Scriptures On Rewards

1.   May the Lord reward you for what you have done. May you have a full reward from the Lord God of Israel, to whom you have come for protection! (Ruth 2:12 GNT)

2.   Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life. (James 1:12 MSG)

3.   The [reverent] fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even than much fine gold; they are sweeter also than honey and drippings from the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is Your servant warned (reminded, illuminated, and instructed); and in keeping them there is great reward. (Psalm 19:9-11 AMP)

4.   So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! (Hebrews 10:35 NLT)

5.   Your reward depends on what you say and what you do; you will get what you deserve. (Proverbs 12:14 GNT)

6.   “If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me. Then you’ll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment’s notice. The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me.” (John 12:26 MSG)

7.   But when you help a needy person, do it in such a way that even your closest friend will not know about it. Then it will be a private matter. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you. (Matthew 6:3-4 GNT)

8.   And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 NLT)

9.   But love your enemies and be kind and do good [doing favors so that someone derives benefit from them] and lend, expecting and hoping for nothing in return but considering nothing as lost and despairing of no one; and then your recompense (your reward) will be great (rich, strong, intense, and abundant), and you will be sons of the Most High, for He is kind and charitable and good to the ungrateful and the selfish and wicked. (Luke 6:35 AMP)

10.   Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. (Psalms 127:3 NLT)
