Seeking The Lord

My nieces and nephews were playing hide and go seek in my house recently. One of them loosely looked around the first floor for the others and didn’t find anyone. She then went to the stairs and said, “I’m not coming up there to search for you!” She wasn’t really searching to begin with, but many of us search for God, the Bible and the things of God just like my niece was “searching.” When the Bible tells us to search or seek, it’s using the Hebrew word “darash.” It means to pursue intentionally, repeatedly seeking relationship. It’s more of a way of life than a temporary assignment. We’re not supposed to simply search, we’re to continually pursue Him. Don’t give up after a short while. Make seeking Him a lifestyle.

Here are some Bible verses on searching for God:

1. If you reach out to me, you will find me when you search for me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 TPT

2. Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.

Isaiah 55:6 NKJV

3. Seek and deeply long for the Lord and His strength [His power, His might]; Seek and deeply long for His face and His presence continually.

Psalms 105:4 AMP

4. The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Psalm 34:10 ESV

5. The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.

Serious Searching

A few years ago, I was at work in Houston when a bad thunderstorm came through and created a flash flood. I was sitting at my desk when my cell phone rang with my boss’ caller ID on it. When I answered, I heard her crying. When I asked what was wrong, she said she was trapped in the street in front of the office. The high waters had come over her hood and shut down her car. She needed help getting into the parking lot.

I took out my wallet and cell phone, then waded through water above my knees out into the street. As I was pushing her car, a couple of strangers hopped out of theirs to help me. I kept slipping in my dress shoes as we pushed her car through the water. Once we got her car into a spot, I grabbed an umbrella to walk her inside. As I closed the umbrella, I realized my wedding ring was gone. I looked at a friend and told him I had to go find it.

He stood over me with an umbrella to prevent the rain from disrupting the water as I searched. We retraced my steps over and over. I got on all fours and dragged my hands across the ground. We searched for over half an hour and couldn’t find it. Since it was thundering and lightening, he convinced me to go back inside until it cleared up. I was soaked to the bone and upset. I called my wife to tell her about what happened.

After about an hour, the rain died down and the waters went down too. I went back out looking for it. I dug through a drain in the parking lot with no luck. I searched and searched for another 45 minutes. As I stood on the curb, I put my head down and told my friend, “I give up.” That’s when something gold and round caught my eye between my feet. I reached down through the water and pulled up my ring! I was so excited that God had answered my prayer and my search wasn’t in vain.

We can probably all quote Jeremiah 29:11, but the verses that come after are just as powerful. Verse 13 says, “When you come looking for me, you’ll find me. “Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed” (MSG). God’s plans to prosper us begin with us seeking Him the way I sought that ring. We must get on our hands and knees and search for Him more than anything else. When we do, we won’t be disappointed because we will find Him and receive the future we hope for.

I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day

This time of year, it becomes obvious that many of us don’t remember much more than the first verse of most Christmas Carols. As we lead up to Christmas this week, I want to explore some powerful verses in some of my favorite carols.

On April 8, 1966, the Time magazine cover asked, “Is God Dead?” In a world where we have a telescope in space looking to the far reaches of the universe and using the Hadron Collider to try to find the “God particle”, many people wonder if there is a need for God in order to explain the creation of the universe and our existence. They see God only as an uneducated person’s explanation of the universe instead of a diety involved in our lives.

When we reduce God to just an explanation of creation, we allow Him to be seen as of no use and dead to society. When bad things happen in our culture, people always ask, “Where is God? Why did He allow that to happen?” But when we fail to put logs on a fire, we don’t ask, “Where is the heat? Why are we being allowed to freeze?” We can’t kick God out of our culture, schools, and government then ask where He is when bad things happen.

He sent His Son into the world to bring life and light into our darkness. John 1:4-5 says, “The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it” (NLT). He was sent to right the wrongs of sin and to chase away the darkness that it brought. The star above the stable was representative of what He was doing. He was sending light into our world that will lead us to salvation.

There is a Christmas Carol called “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day”. It’s very powerful and moving. Here’s the verse that stands out to me:

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail

With peace on earth, good will to men.”

God is not dead, nor is He simply an explanation for our very being. He is a loving God who is involved in our daily lives. We were created with purpose and our lives have meaning. To think there is no God and that we are simply here by random chance is to say there is no right or wrong and that life has no meaning. God sent His Son to us to show us that we matter. He sent Him to show He cares about our struggles mentally, physically, and spiritually. He came to right the wrongs, to bring peace on earth, and goodwill to men.
