Seeking The Lord

My nieces and nephews were playing hide and go seek in my house recently. One of them loosely looked around the first floor for the others and didn’t find anyone. She then went to the stairs and said, “I’m not coming up there to search for you!” She wasn’t really searching to begin with, but many of us search for God, the Bible and the things of God just like my niece was “searching.” When the Bible tells us to search or seek, it’s using the Hebrew word “darash.” It means to pursue intentionally, repeatedly seeking relationship. It’s more of a way of life than a temporary assignment. We’re not supposed to simply search, we’re to continually pursue Him. Don’t give up after a short while. Make seeking Him a lifestyle.

Here are some Bible verses on searching for God:

1. If you reach out to me, you will find me when you search for me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 TPT

2. Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.

Isaiah 55:6 NKJV

3. Seek and deeply long for the Lord and His strength [His power, His might]; Seek and deeply long for His face and His presence continually.

Psalms 105:4 AMP

4. The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Psalm 34:10 ESV

5. The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.

Lamentations 3:25 NLT

Sitting And Seeking

Not long after I started writing devotions I signed up for a writers conference where several published authors would be. One day during the conference I was able to share a meal with William Paul Young, author of “The Shack.” He gave me a piece of wisdom that still drives me to this day. He told me to quit looking at God as a well, and instead see Him as a river of life. Then he said, “Every day you need to sit at that river with God with an empty bucket. Sit in His presence and ask Him to fill your bucket with fresh water from His Word every day. If you will seek Him out and listen, I promise you He will fill your bucket with fresh water every day.” With that, I began seeking God more diligently and He has continued to fill my bucket.

In Luke 10, Jesus went to the house of Martha, the sister of Lazarus and Mary. As Jesus began to teach, Martha went into the kitchen to begin preparing food for everyone. However, Mary stayed behind and sat at the feet of Jesus listening to every word. As her bucket was being filled up, Martha disrupted what was going on to ask Jesus to make Mary help her. Jesus told Martha she was distracted and concerned about all these other things. Then He said in verse 42, “There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her” (NLT). She had learned to seek Jesus and to allow Him to fill her bucket with living water.

The psalmist understood the power of seeking God’s presence too. In Psalm 105:4 he wrote, “Seek and deeply long for the Lord and His strength [His power, His might]; Seek and deeply long for His face and His presence continually” (AMP). It’s not just a command for us to take time to seek out God’s presence continually, it’s also a necessity. Too many time though, we are like Martha. We’re busy with life, work, serving the Lord and all the other things we have to do. Yet Jesus said Mary had discovered the one thing we should be concerned about. We must all make time to seek Him and sit at His feet. We must deeply long for His presence to the point our day is incomplete without it. When we do, He will meet us and renew us with His fresh water.

Abandoned 


To abandon someone is to quit supporting them or to give up on them. If you’ve ever been through some of life’s toughest circumstances, you know what it’s like to be abandoned by some of your family or friends. You find out that there are people in your life that you can count on, and there are people that you can’t. When you’re looking for advice, a place to regroup, or just a shelter from the storm, some people that you seek out will abandon you. Some of the ones who you thought would support you through thick and thin give up on you.

David was a person who knew a thing or two about being abandoned. He was forgotten by his father, disrespected by his brothers, shamed by his wife, chased by the king, and dishonored by his son. The people in his life that he should have been able to count on, turned their backs on him at some point in his life. He knew a thing or two about rock bottom. He looked for those he could count on in times of trouble.

In all of his searching, there was one who never abandoned him. God. David wasn’t a perfect man either. He cheated on his wife, had a man murdered, and did some unthinkable things. Yet when he sought after God, he knew that no matter what he had done, God would not abandon him. He knew that there was nothing he had done that God couldn’t or wouldn’t forgive. When others gave up on him, God never did. In fact, God said he was a man after His own heart. 

You may have walked David’s shoes. Maybe you’ve been abandoned by those who love you or you’ve abandoned the things you know are right. Either way, if you will seek God, He won’t abandon you. Psalm 9:10 says, “Those who know you, Lord, will trust you; you do not abandon anyone who comes to you” (GNT). It doesn’t matter what’s been done to you or what you’ve done to others, you can find shelter, hope, and forgiveness in God when you seek Him out.
